Wednesday Tales from the week

  • On: 10/07/2009 19:45:59

This is going to be a random blog. I always do random blogs when I have nothing riveting to say.  Well, I would love to say riveting things, but this week I am on a rest week – which is a very good thing – coming off 3 + very solid weeks of hard training and a lot of hard work.  It is not the training that has been a monster….I am used to that, it is this weather.  Jerome just looks at me with those eyes, “I am not ready for this this early.”  Right….this weekend it is supposed to be 29F in the AM.  Well, that is cold.  And, I even had to admit to myself today that NOVEMBER 14th is a long time to train for a 1/2IM.  I am feeling fine but I will say it IS hard for me to get up in the AM recently.  It is cold – our furnace is not turned on yet because we are having our basement floors done – so all our furniture is near the furnace.  And, you know you can not turn the furnace on w/o it having space to “breathe.”  So, it is COLD in here and I am back in full fleece and fleece hats!  And the kids have a cold, so I am trying not to get sick. I feel like we walk around on eggshells with the winter colds/winter flus when the kids are in school….ugh.  LOL  Anyway, I am not complaining, but I do admit dark cold days are rough.  I always thought Kona was late!  CRACK me up…NOT.   Clearwater 70.3 Worlds in mid-November is LATE.    And, today is the first Wednesday night since May that I have not swam in my Open water lake.  I had a little moment tonight as I wiped bugars off of Graham’s face….and thought, WHERE IS MY OW SWIM DATE NIGHT?  Last week I was there.  Water temps and air temps were very cold.  Borderline freezing.  Jerome sat on the beach (ha, beach…ok…) and watched Dave R, Frank and I swim.  Frank did 1 mile and was like, “um, no thank you!” Dave R is training for IM FL, so I said, “2 miles!”  It was cold and I felt like molasses coming off a hard day the day before.  I got out of the water – ran to my car to put on my 1,000 layers and finally admitted it was TOO cold to swim outside – and dark.  Bummer!!!!!

Speaking of Kona – it is KONA week this week and I have enjoyed following everyone and talking to my athletes that are out there racing – I am fired up for them!  GO Michelle, Marit and Ange!  I love the excitement of that race.   I really thought this week, “Do I wish I was doing it?”  Nope is my answer…so that is good.  Instead guess what I get to do on Saturday??  I get to go to my 20th High School Reunion!  I am actually looking forward to it!  That was one of the reasons, believe it or not, that I did not want to race in Kona this year….(and the small reason I had to ride my bike a lot to train for the IM! )!   We are all a buzz on Facebook about it and friends are flying in…we are having a pre-party party….getting everyone together will be a blast!  I am really looking forward to it.  AND we are all going stag, of course….the guys are like, “Um, no thank you!”  I do not blame them.  I will post pics afterwards.  I plan on drinking.  Let me warn you about that. I DO NOT DRINK.  Really, maybe a glass of wine 1-2x/year….

Speaking of wine…Jerome and I went out on Saturday night last weekend to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary!  Yeah!  Honestly, I think we were just celebrating the fact that Jerome has not left me or gotten so annoyed with me in these 12 years!  He is so patient and a great partner for me and my high-strung-ness (is that a word?).    Anyway we went to Cooper’s Hawk for dinner + wine + dessert.  And, I had a glass of Syrah.  It was really good. I drank it all.  Then, I started to giggle.  Then, I got bright red.  Then, I started to sweat.  Then, the room started to spin and we needed to leave.  Jerome wanted to run into a few stores (he loves to shop but doesn’t have the time).  We went into American Eagle and the 17 year old that was working there was cute.  I guess I was talking to him and babbling on about how I did NOT like the faded jeans that they were selling and they were SO 80s (I was dating myself big time).  I started buying underwear…and then silly things…I needed to get a grip.  Talk about a cougar.  HAHAHA  uh oh.  And, my dear friends, that is after 1 glass of wine.  Nevermind I ran 16 miles so hard in the AM I was probably stumbling around from that + the wine…not a good combination.  But, it felt so good.  So, this weekend will be TAKE 2.  And, I am looking forward to it!  J  Jerome will be on call to pick us up if we need him!

Today I slept in.  And, when I say slept in I mean 7.15am!  Love it.  And, the only reason I got up is because I had to get up to get the kids ready for school – they were still fast asleep.  When the house is as cold as 58F we sleep hard!  And, I needed to sleep in because  1.) this is my rest week and 2.) yesterday I felt like I was getting a cold.  So, I STOP everything and sleep. I slept nearly 9.5 hours hard.  I felt much better when I got up this AM but instead of doing my training.  I put my PJs on and sat on my couch – turned the TV on – and worked all day.  I did not get out of my PJs until I had to pick my kids up. I talked to athletes in Kona, friends, Comcast (riveting really), people getting ready for IM AZ….it was a productive day.  Again, I thought I would rest today and not get the cold the kids have (which I am doing fine tonight – yay!) and get work done so that when I am a mess this weekend, I can lay in my bed.  HAHA.  So, a little foreshadowing?  Perhaps.   So, tomorrow I will be back on my workouts and be a good girl.

Some of you have asked me to post my blog I started to write about Kona & getting to Kona.  I am grounded on that email for now.   It is not good yet (probably too harsh) and needs to be re-written and fixed up a bit.  And, I have not had the head to do that YET.  But, someday I will..so hang tight. Maybe watching Kona online on Saturday will fuel me to finish that blog and post it.  Anyway, I will get it done!

And, thanks to everyone who posted questions on my last blog – I had fun with that one!  And, I will still answer questions in that post, so feel free to ask!  I had fun answering them all !!  And seeing people post who don’t normally post – good for you.

Off to bed I go…this party girl needs to rest up for Saturday night.  I do everything intense, so wait until Sunday AM and see how sparky I am then!  J  And, yes…20 years for you young-ins.  I remember at our 10 year reunion we were like, “WE are going to be 38 at our next reunion – that is SO old.”  Yep, amazing what a little perspective will do.  It is old.  Oh well…..the wine will wash all of those feelings away!

Cheers!

As much as I love that you just referred to yourself as a "cougar" I don't think you're quite old enough.  Even if the AE kid was 17.  Hysterical!

OMG... I cannot even comprehend that kind of cold.  OWS...in freezing temps... are you kidding me?  Holy crap!  You are so hardcore, Jen!

Oooohhh... have FUN at the reunion!  I would like to attend my 20th as well.  I missed my 10th b/c I lived so far away and it was over the Turkey Day holiday.  It would have been great to catch up with everyone.  Thing is, Facebook almost makes reunions seem obsolete now.  There isn't that 'surprise' factor anymore.  Darn.  Watch the vino, my friend.  I'm a non-drinker as well and those 'rare occasions' sneak up on you FAST!  Have FUN!  And... happy 12th anny to you and Jerome!

Have a GREAT weekend!

You know you are a great coach when you can "sleep hard" and blog about it.

A large section of the athlete population has no idea what sleeping hard means.

Way to go coach.
