Questions?
- On: 09/28/2009 15:42:02
I love blogging...as do most of you who blog and read blogs. Blogs are a staple of my day. I tend to read my friends and athletes' blogs as I eat breakfast and start my day.
But, I wanted to write a blog today but felt like I had nothing terribly interesting to say. I had just put together some thoughts on what I think it takes for athletes to get to Kona, etc...but then I kept re-reading it and thought...well, that sounds kind of ...well, ahem, strong. Most of you that know me know that I do not mince my words....but, I, for once, hesitated posting it. Not sure people really want to read that. So, here I am ... not sure what to talk about for once. HA
So, let's have some fun! I answer questions a lot from my blog topics and just general questions overall about training, recovery, my training, etc. So, ASK me a question...something you have always wanted to ask...not that I am really that exciting (let's be honest), but just because it is a fun blog topic and what someone else wants to ask YOU know someone else is wondering too.
I will answer anything...my training, my food, my whatever, Triathlon questions in general......sex questions? Bring em on.
I will answer them in the comments section....OR if a question warrants its own blog post, I will do that as well. Um, yeah, and if you don't want to ask me a question (or don't care what I think), fake it...it would be sad if no one asked me anything...that would hurt my feelings and you all know how SENSITIVE I am. HAHAHHAHA. not.
However, here is my disclaimer: *I am not trained on any topic except Triathlon coaching, being a mom and a wife, sister, friend, daughter, swim psycho...Facebook whore and soccer mom....and, I can hold my own on any PYSCH questions....I am a therapist in my free time.*
Bring it on - OH, and another thing....MY MOM reads my blog, so try to keep it somewhat clean. Um, yeah, thanks.

Pick as many as you like to answer: What did you study in college and what did you do for work before becoming a triathlon coach? Do you still play basketball? Can you beat Jerome in a one-on-one game of basketball? What are some of your most memorable triathlon moments and why? What do you like about coaching and what do you find challenging or frustrating about it? What are your goals for Clearwater? Do you get your straight forward talking ways from your mom or dad? What does it take for athletes to get to Kona?- #2

ok, here are my question(s):1. what is the best way to acclimate for a hot race when its not so hot where you live and train? how to drink enough to stay hydrated and cool, but not too much to get side stitches and cramps? and what fluid replacement drink do you train and race with?
2. your prediction on how many years until Graham can beat you in a 5k?
3. are you going to start doing dolphin kicks off the turns this year?
cheers!

Other than being a kick A$$ mom and wife, what do you do on your off days ( besides work) and what do you do with your time when you arent training. ie: watching tv ( Yea i know!), cooking, reading, that sort of stuff.Do you think that being an older athlete ( me, not you...yet...hee hee) means you have to work harder or just train smarter? or both?
How do you get the chlorine smell out of your skin so that Jerome doesnt say "you smell" and you didnt even swim that day?
Why pink? Was it always Pink? :)

Hey Jen! It's Schwartzy, got a new email address. Here's my question: What is your biggest advice for new moms in the first year...as far as getting back into training/racing while balancing little sleep and the life adjustment...also did you have to handle people around you that did not understand being an athlete AND being a mom during the beginning? :-)- #9

Where do you see yourself in ten years with triathlon? As you get older and have much experience in triathlon how has your "head" changed in terms of competing? Does turning 40 (soon) scare you in terms of your training etc.? What else do you want to accomplish since you have done just about everything under the sun in terms of triathlon? I just ponder these questions myself and coming to grips with the age thing and just wonder what you think and feel.- #13

******#1, ROZ*******Let me answer your questions - I am going in order!
1.) My major was English in college. I loved it. I wanted originally to be an attorney- prosecutor....but my mom warned me I would be living in the library my entire life and that worried me. I needed to be with people. My Jr and Sr years in college, I was in some advanced placement program and they placed me in a managed care internship...at a company called First Health (Health Care Compare back in the 80s/90s)....and I interned there for 2 years in college and graduated and they offered me a job. I worked for them until 1999...So, from 91-99...and I LOVED IT. I left as the Manager of National Accounts and spent 1/2 my time in Dallas working with EDS and Texas Instruments. I left First Health in 99 because I wanted to travel less and get into Fitness. I took a job as a Director of Health and Fitness at a health club - started personal training and teaching swim lessons and teaching a Triathlon class.....I stayed there until I was 11 weeks pregnant with the twins and then I was home....and then that is when I started my coaching job...when I started bedrest with the twins!
#2) Do I still play basketball? HA! I WISH. I lost all my lateral movement since becoming a triathlete. I will play "HORSE" with some neighbors or the kids - but it is SO funny b/c I played with a Girl's ball and most generic balls are Men's balls (ha) so the feeling is a bit different.
3). JEROME sucks at any hand/ball sports - I can kill him at basketball and any sport that involved a ball.
4.) What are some of you most memorable Triathlon moments? Honestly, most of my memorable moments are when Jerome and I traveled all over the world - before kids - racing ITU worlds for Duathlon and Triathlon. We raced the World Championships in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Spain (holy hell), all over the US, Mexico, France, Iceland.....England, we really enjoyed ourselves fully. And, raced with some amazing athletes and made some great friends. Personally, my most memorable race was Ironman Hawaii in 2004. I honestly thought that IM was the hardest thing I had ever done and thought it was just very hard...it was the year of 40-50 mph winds. Then, in 2006 Jerome and I raced together, and that was special...and our town threw us a huge party, we were on the NBC news....and had a day named after us in town....that was special. (hee hee).
4.) I really do not see myself doing anything else other than coaching, I love all aspects of it. I love the people. I love helping people - all levels - doesn't matter one bit to me as long as the athlete is plugged in and dedicated to the plan and the goals. I love getting people excited about Triathlon and seeing people do things they never thought they could do (finish a Triathlon, PR, q-fy for huge races, etc). The frustrating part of Triathlon coaching is when athletes have HUGE goals for themselves but don't do what is necessary to reach their goals and sabatoge their training and racing and recovery by making excuses or just by simply not being present in their own comittments. OF course things come up...but, the difference is they don't come up every week - more like an exception rather than the rule. The other frustrating part in coaching is athlete's who don't believe....lack confidence and lack any trust in their plan. The athlete's that do the best are the ones who throw caution to the wind and BELIEVE and that belief builds confidence all across the board.
5.) Goals for Clearwater: Good question b/c I rarely put my goals out there for public knowledge. Just not my style...but, I did say you all could ask me anything. I have one major goal for Clearwater and that is to Podium in my AG (top 5). The time always takes care of itself.
6.) I get my straight talking from my MOM!!!! OH MY! My dad is like Jerome - low key and just goes with the flow - so I am used to that and I think that Jerome and my dad are good for me....
7.) I will post that blog about KONA......I am going to work on it and post it later this week. :))
THANKS ROZ! :)

****************#2 CHERYL STINE*******************1.) How do you acclimate to hot weather racing when you live in cold weather? Well, this is the tricky one! Of course, getting to the race site 14 days prior to the race is unrealistic for Age Groupers! SOO, the best thing - is to just overdress for all workouts - full fleece, FULL blown longs, hats, mittens, gloves, etc....I had all my Kona athletes prepping like this this fall. Also, all drinks heat up in the microwave - HOT like piss....so that when you drink these drinks they are hot. that is one of the weirdest things about hot races - especially the IMs, the drinks are HOT. Ick. I spent a great deal of time on my trainer ON THE POOL DECK.....overdressed and temps in the 80s in there. It sure isn't fool-proof, but it is the best we can do.
2.) How do you know how much to drink that it is adequate but does not cause stitches? There are a lot of reason for side stitches and usually I find it is more related to spasms in the diaphram or sometimes the breathing is off...but if the fluids are not absorbing the athlete needs to be so in tune with their body that they can adjust to the fluid intake based on the weather and heat and humidity. Of course, more fluids in heat, etc....and, if the drink you are using continues to give you stitches, then switch your fluids. Stitches are not normal and should be addressed in training....so that they are limited in racing.
WHAT IS YOUR ELECTROLYTE DRINK? I drink MAXIM. I do not ever drink anything else. In short course I can control what I carry. In an IM I will carry Maxim and then I will start to train with what they have on the course. I do ALL MY RUN TRAINING on Gatorade (or Gatorade Endurance) b/c that is what they have in my 2 "A" races this year: Eagleman and Clearwater. So, I can carry enough to drink on my bike for a 1/2 Ironman, but the run, I rely on the aide stations, so I train my body to shift from Maxim to Gatorade...JUST like in a race. I am a firm believer that you train the stomach like the body. Nothing fancy about that.
3.) It is going to be awhile until Graham can beat me in a 5k....he is coming though. He would have to run faster than 6.10s or so....give or take to beat me....and while he is fast for 7...not quite yet but ... he is a speed monster. I give him 4-5 years and then I will be over the hill. haha
4.) ARE You going to start dolphin kicking off the wall this year ? OF COURSE CHERYL.......I do try.....! :))))

*****************#4 SUE!!!********************Sue, Hi! Ok, well, I do have to answer this two ways. First, I am very old school in that I believe people need to learn how to suffer and REALLY know what HARD IS versus easy...I find that most athletes w/o any feedback work in that grey zone all the time and get more fit but not necessarily faster .......With that being said, I do think that athletes need a way to measure progress and effort. Honestly, I like the combo of the HR monitor and GPS/PACE - as long as on easy days you either leave that at home and learn what zone 1 is.....and on hard days you know what pace correlates to zone 4+. I think there are places to use pace and effort - LIKE THE TRACK....HR monitor has no place......for example.
The Power tap/training with POWER......watts.....for beginners, not necessary, in my opinion....I think as the athlete becomes more advanced it is just another tool to measure progress and effort - so that X watts correlates to X HR....I like that....
Just so you know, as a coach, I coach athletes that have ONLY a HR monitor (I do think something has to give us some feedback other than RPE (perceived exertion) everyday)......and I coach athletes that have IT ALL......and download every single day's workouts on GPS, HR monitors, Computrainers, SRMs..etc. Nothing is right or wrong...it just depends on how you , as the athlete (and if you use a coach) like to work with the data and use the data to get better/faster.....etc.
As an athlete....I hated the power tap....and Ergomo (like the SRM to measure watt output) b/c it is so inconsistent outside due to hills, stops, drove me batty. I do not love the HR monitor, but use to to do a gut check of easy/hard runs.....and bikes....and I am a HUGE USER of run pace.....I know what pace I need to run and I run that pace....and the best tool I have ever used: COMPUTRAINER - since I live and train in Chicago, it is the best tool for the $......gives me all the feedback, spin scan, courses that I need.
THANKS! :)) JEN

*****************#5 CARRIE KIMBER ***************************Hi Carrie! :)
Good question - really, I enter into a trance ..... I am so laser focused that I am 100% plugged into the workout or the goal. I am a creature of habit, so I eat the same thing, I eat the same thing before X time of a workout and I only eat what I would race on in all my training. I only race on Vanilla or Plain Gus...well, I don't eat anything else. You maybe would catch me eating a Clif Bar Luna but only b/c I could eat that during a race if I got into trouble (long course).
let's use this AM for example of how I get ready for my workout.....I had a horribly hard track workout - 4miles of hard running...and there is no hiding in these workouts and I have never not nailed a track workout...b/c I go to that workout READY. I have a super easy the day before..I eat SMART and for fuel the night before....I do NOT mess around. I sleep very well. I set myself up for success. I wear clothes that I can run hard in (sounds silly...but it is not)...and when I was driving to the track this AM - it was 20+ mph winds and the temp was 45F and it was DARK and icky outside....you know what I kept telling myself? I GET TO go to the track and run hard. I get to train for Clearwater - b/c last year I was on the couch after my car accident. AND, I am afraid to disappoint my coach. Coach Dave KNOWS what I need to nail on that track. He has seen me at my all time fastest when I was running 2.40 on that track for an 800. And, when I was coming back after babies and barely getting around the track in 3.12-3.15s....or slower...and the expectations of the coach REALLY fires me up. I am afraid of his comments if I do not nail the workout. So, the entire drive down to the track I think: "I am feeling good and really ready to hammer...I will be fast today, I will push off my toes, I will NOT cross my arms over...I will LIFT my knees......I will lift @ my hip flexor......" And, I expect to be positive and I know that if I show up : rested, fueled properly, hydrated and mentally plugged in, it would be hard to "failure."
And, for racing....this will come across as a little over-confident, but honestly, that surely is better than the other side....I go to win - win my AG, win the race,.....etc...and I do not settle for anything less - and if I get beat, I get beat. I will not win my AG or OA at every race - but if I go to that race with the BELIEF that I can.....then, I am one foot ahead of everyone else. It is a mind game. Everyone trains hard. I know that. I write training programs all day every day. Most people fall short b/c they do not train the mind like the body....AND stomach.
Ok, I can go on and on on this one.....
THANKS - JEN :)

**************************#7 JULIA M**********************1.) What do you do in your off days/downtime? LOVELY! Well, I wish I had an exciting answer for you ...but, honestly, between work (50+ hours/week), training (15-20 hours/week), kids full time mommy...I really do not do anything else. I LOVE TV, but I do not sit & only watch TV....I LOVE TO SHOP....I LOVE TO eat (but behave), I love to catch up with my friends that are not triathlon related....I spend most of the day buried in Triathlon, so I do like to get away and talk about boys and girls and other girl things. I LOVE to socialize and TALK - I love to go out for breakfast - I LOVE to go to Farmer's Markets (they are lame here though)....I love to spend time w/ my parents/sister/brother and families....I do NOT like to cook. I do NOT like to clean.....I do enjoy reading....And, I LOVE writing. I love blogs....I read alot of blogs and REALLY enjoy the blogs of my atheltes, friends and strangers! :)))
2.) Do you think that being an older athlete you have to work harder/smarter, etc?
YES! I think that Masters athletes have to do a LOT more preventive work (PT, rehab, massage, stretching) as well as many more things like working with a personal trainer, PILATES, YOGA.....things that really keep the body healthy and fresh and challenged. I think that women need to really focus on strength. Men on flexibility. I think that masters need to keep strength all year round....Of course they need to be smart, everyone does....but even more so at 40+.
3.) How do you get that chlorine smell out of your skin? HA!!!! I always smell like chlorine - I actually like it - yes, b/c it is better than the LAKE smell. Jerome doesn't even know...he is immune to it. I like the start of Masters (now) b/c we get to go to the fancy smelly soap and lotions and shampoos and use them more! I have not found the answer yet! LOL
4.) Why PINK? Has it always been PINK? I blame it all on my mom. My room growing up was Laura Ashley PINK...all over the walls and carpeting and bed linens...I picked it all out - so it has ALWAYS been pink for me. :)

*******************#8 Melissa S! (PIPPI)********************1.) What is your best advice on transitioning being a new mom (1st year) and doing triathlons?
Great question! (For you too Cheryl A!)....Some of this sounds a bit cliche, but work with me here.....The #1 issue in the beginning is sleep. Now, this is not for everyone, but for us who came home with TWO babies who weighed 4.5 lbs....most babies do not sleep thru the night until they are about 10 lbs....so, we had months and months w/o sleep. I was barely hanging on. Honestly, working out or anything like that took a second seat. I could have cared less. Jerome would walk in the door after work and I would literally hand him the 2 babies and go to bed. He would feed them - and do their 10pm feeding and then I would sleep...then I would get up and feed them at their next shift, 12am (every 2 hours for preemies)....
ANYWAY, I started slowly. I started to walk. I remember going out for a walk and I tried to jog....and I could only feel my boobs and stomach and butt.....something i was not used to at all. Then, I was nursing so my boobs would be leaking all over the place (and it was JANUARY!)...and I remember thinking, "oh my gosh, this is pathetic." But, the body adapts and it adapts quickly. It will NOT allow you to come back too soon. I came back too fast initially and got masitities (sp?) and was in bed sicker than a dog....so, that will slap you back into reality that there is NO rush. The body will tell you when and how to come back. usually just walking and then jogging is the best.....the bike saddle does NOT work...at least for me....
I think the more fit you stay in your pregnancy the easier it is to get it back. IF you do not have a choice (bedrest) then the recovery is a monster. I would get into a routine with your baby. Once I started to get enough sleep, the baby sleeps a ton in the beginning and I would jump on the trainer for 30-40 minutes just to spin.....I would do it when I could. And, once I could get out...I would connect with friends just so I could get some fresh air and mix it up w/ some friends.
But, listen to the DR in the beginning and slowly come back in the first 6 weeks and then , if the body behaves and adapts, you can get back to base training pretty quickly!
2.) What did I say to people that did not understand being an athlete and a mom in the beginning? Well, everyone that knew me was MORE surprised I was a mom than an ahtlete....since that is how they know me, haha...so, if someone was like, "YOU are doing a race with 6 month old twins??" I would be like, "HELL YES.." I was smart. I was confident. I ate well so I could nurse (in the beginning) and still do some light training. I listend to my body and if I did not feel good, I really did rest OR sleep....I was SUPER strict in the beginning to lose the baby weight...(wish I had that strictness now. lol)....and it is your baby and your life, so no explanations are even needed. A fit and healthy mom is a BETTER mom! :)))
THANKS - JEN ! :))

**********************#9 MARY Bradbury!****************************Hey Mary!
1.) How important is strength training for women - to get faster running??
Strength training for women, and especially us who are close to 40 is critical. Do I think you can get after w/o it? YES. Do I think you can maintain your speed longer and stay healthier with it? YES. I HATE HATE strength training. I would rather almost go to the dentist....it is not my fav...so, Instead I go to a posh posh PILATES studio and take an Advanced class and work my tail off 1x/week there. I find that the core is the critical part - it plays a huge role in efficiency in all sports and especially when we get tired - the strong core will stay engaged and pull us thru these workouts/races better.
I recommend athletes to hire a personal trainer if $ and time were no issue. IF it is then to go to a class and do that class - sometimes a Cross fit or something is fine, but THEN again most of those are super hard and a little over the top when triathletes are trying to swim, bike and run and do everything else - if you can not recover in 48hours, it is too much. So, do more functional stuff....like push ups, lunges, working with your body....and incorporate that for 45 min in your weekly plan.....
It is something I do in the winter all the time....AND incorporate weights off the bike...so big ring work on the bike trainer into lunges type of things....in the winter....base cycle...helps mix things up!
THANKS - JEN :)

1.) What is the best way to learn flip turns? HONESTLY, to do watch someone who can do them well first...so a swimmer at your masters team, YOU TUBE videos...and then there are play by play instructions on your YOU TUBE or with swimmer who can do them...I show the swimmers here all the time...And, I have them start by doing a sommersault in the pool..and learn how to roll over and tuck......then we do it onto the wall.....and then we talk about the breathing......and then we talk about opening up the flip turn and rotation.....AND then I make everyone try it during the Warm up and cooldowns and drills....so when we are going slower.....and it slowly comes. People feel out of control when they start them and feel totally out of breath, but that is all normal. But, in my opinion, swimmers need to learn how to do flip turns....some will disagree with me....but fast swimmers flip. YOU can learn....I know it!
2.) how do you like being married to a BRIT?
HAHA! Jerome is lovely...that is a british word! He is extremely supportive and a good husband and father....he has some VERY weird food likes, but I have been with him for so long, so that it is the norm for me. :) So, I love it. haha ;))
thanks - JEN :)

******************#11 KIM K!!!!!!!******************************************1.) do you know any hot Triathletes I can hook you up with?
Oh gosh. PLENTY of hot triathletes -- but I struggle to think of any single ones! I will keep my eye out for you.
2.) Do you eat chocolate everyday? NO. I usually have something sweet every day though...something small....When I was trying to lose baby weight, years ago - it would be 1 tootsie roll. CAN YOU even imagine that? I was SO disciplined. I am not like that now....When I am in my peak for my "A" races I am very good...so that means for me starting 10/1...but I do not cut it all out of my diet....just too extreme for me and I enjoy my sweets and especially chocolate, so I include it in moderation. :))
3.) Swimming takes awhile to love....you have not been doing it long enough to love it yet with me...IT will come....trust me....I have an email of a gal I coach who HATED it (well, a lot of those).....and the turn around has been amazing. Atheltes like Pro Elizabeth Fedofsky hated it...OH MY GOD.....wouldn't go to Masters (back in the day) and she slowly figured out that in order for her to meet her goals and improve she HAD to embrace it and love it....and she slowly did and now she swims OW with me! :) it will come. It is a proces....it always is....so be patient. Most give up too soon.....

******************#12 Kerri R!****************************Hey Kerri ! :)
1.) Where do you see yourself in ten years with triathlon? As you get older and have much experience in triathlon how has your "head" changed in terms of competing? Does turning 40 (soon) scare you in terms of your training etc.? What else do you want to accomplish since you have done just about everything under the sun in terms of triathlon? I just ponder these questions myself and coming to grips with the age thing and just wonder what you think and feel.
**Good QUESTIONS KERRI and very honest b/c you and I are the same age....and have been doing this for a long time (is it ok to say I am only 38? haha :)) j/k). Ok....
1.) In 10 years....shit shit shit. I will be 48. Why does that sound old from a Triathlon perspective. I know this is going to sound trite, but I have not thought that far in advance. I will still be racing and competing, I know that. But, I have accomplished ALL I have wanted to in Triathlon racing. I have ONE MAJOR goal that I still have over my head and it is related to the Ironman, but I should take care of that @ IM ROTH in 2010....but, you are right, after that, I am unsure.
It is very hard b/c you start to feel that you can not compete in the OA races anymore. As we get older, of course we do get slower - but more top end speed like 5ks and sprint triathlons....not necessarily IMs and 1/2 IMs....I still feel like I can get faster...NOT sure I will see my 5k PRs anymore, but I am ok with that. I am not a 5k road racer....ya know? In regards to Triathlon....I find that I have to work harder to keep the TOP end speed. I can still get that speed, but in order to keep it, I have to be totally on my game... I find that I can not lose the last 5lbs anymore unless I basically cut out everything. 5 years ago I would just think about it and it would take care of itself. haha.
So, in 10 years - just enjoying this sport and competing competitively in the 45-49 AG. I think I will still like the Worlds stuff and Hawaii stuff...and I know that from a business standpoint, I think I will be blowing my coaching up and hiring other coaches, doing group coaching and all that stuff....b/c I think I will have the time as the kids go off to college, etc.
2.) Turning 40 does not scare me really, b/c I feel like I am so much younger. You know what scares me? NOT being competitive in big races OA...that is what I worry about. I go to win or win my AG..and AG is fine as we get older, but I do worry about losing that "umph" as we get older. I have not gotten there yet, but I see glimpses of it....sometimes when I see these 20 year olds running 18.20s at the local 5ks....and thinking...hell....ya know? but, I think 40 year olds are very competitive in IMs OA and 1/2 IMs OA....as long as we do it right and very smart. But I also think that the early 40s for women is a tough time - SOOOO intertwined in our kid's lives and priorities shift a bit and I am OK with that.
3.) What else do you want to accomplish in Triathlon? Geez...good one....I want to podium in my AG at the IM. I want to win Eagleman again (AG), I want to place in the Top 5 at Worlds TRI SC and LC in Worlds in my AG....I want to place in the top 3 in my AG at Nationals...see, big goals...some I have done and some I want to do in the new AG....I don't have time goals for Triathlon - but, I also want to PR in the marathon again. I want to run a 3 hour marathon....and I think I need to do that before I am around 42. No magic number, just one Coach Dave and I tossed around ...before really slowing down. And, see some will read this and say, "I got faster in my 40s" Well, and that may be true, but for athletes and Triathletes that were atheltes in HS, college and then racing for 15+ years, we don't get faster in our 40s. I do not see my swimming getting slower.....not for a long time...where I notice is top end run speed, honestly.
Oh, and another thing. I used to be able to go back to back hard days....Like track on Monday and hard bike on Tuesday...can't really do that anymore. Anyone over 40 or close to it can not really do that too well....we need more recovery. I really noticed that past 37-38.....and I notice it with the atheltes I work with too....especially 60+...they can only do 1-2 days total of 7 of any intensity.
THANKS - Jen :)

**********************#14 SHERRY L*********************1.) What were your beginnings in Triathlon?
I ran and swam and played basketball my entire life....HS+ and always was an athlete....always intense and competitive. That is all I knew...SPORTS. I was training for the Chicago marathon and doing local run races in 1994 and 1993 and in 95 I met Jerome...he got me into Triathlons - b/c he was like, "you swam as a kid and in HS and you are not doing triathlons??" Um.....I did not like to swim after HS.....Jerome was heading off to Cancun for the 1995 World Triathlon Championships and we agreed to do a Duathlon in OHIO that summer and it ironically was a qualifier for Duathlon Worlds back then....I ended up winning the AG and qualfying. ALL I remember was thinking how horribly hard this race was and HOW in the hell could I race in the World Championships? I suck. BUT, I took the slot and the rest is history. I LOVED IT. That was the bug, I was hooked and loved it.
2.)) What is your favorite distance and why?
1/2 Ironman....why? Because you have to be strong AND FAST to win. The nutrition is critical and if the nutrition is not buttoned up - you can not do well...hard to fake a 1/2 IM. I also like the longer swim and longer distances, but not too long. I still like to RACE it....

****************#19 Michelle Simmons*************************1.) What does your training look like in the off season? Difference between now?
Of course I take time off after my last race of the year - this year it will be after Clearwater - I will take 2 weeks completely off...and then a couple of really playing around...will go on vacation w. the kids /family and hike and do other activities with them and relax.
I mix things up a bit in the winter. I get back into the gym harder core. LIke I said before I HATE the gym but I focus on strength, do pilates, do yoga and all that stuff I neglect more when I am racing.
I do go back to a base phase. I DO NOT hammer year round. I go back to more hills and strength work onthe bike and run...I maintain my run fitness a bit more but am NOT on the track...so a focus more on strength and power and form....
For the swimming , I focus a TON on it in the winter - moreso than the summer. I actually peak my swimming for the STATE Meet in April...so I am in the best swim shape (pool wise ) in April. I like to compete in swim meets and I do......as many as I can do.
I focus on getting outside on my bike 1x/week in the winter and that is NOT always doable in 64" of snow last year in chicago and super cold.
I usually do Cyclocross, but not this year due to Clearwater.
I start to take a computrainer class w/ a group in January to keep things honest and fun and mixed up.
I do go thru the cycles - I do a base phase, but don't need as long as one as some b/c I have been doing this for so long and with TWO "A" races early in my season (June & JULy) I have alot of early season work to do.
Michelle - I do not understand your question #2.????

***********#26 RICH K********************1.) how hard is it to pee on the bike and what do you think about to relax to pee?
HA! It is not hard at all....but the problem is no one tries it in training, so they can not do it.....the best advice is that you have to STOP pedaling...you have to take the pressure off the legs and bring the HR down a little bit and just relax......nothing overly complicated but you are already all wet from swimming, so it is not a vanity issue, so just relax and release! :) LOL

**************************#27 ALI ***************************Hey Ali! !!
1.) How many calories do you have per hour in an IM?
SIMPLE....275 calories. IF I feel I need more, more up to 300calories. If I feel full and heavier, I reduce to 250. I carry 225 calories in each bottle....I go thru 1 bottle per hour (this varies if I am in kona (more) or in cold (less) ) and I just adapt my gels per this weather. I only take in Maxim + Gus. Sometimes I will have a banana if I need something to chew, but my #1 rule: KEEP IT SIMPLE. VERY simple the body does not like all the messy stuff.

************#55 MARIT C-L***************************Hey Marit!
HERE YOU COME KONA !!!!!! YIPPEEE! :)
1.) IF you could go back in time and speak to your younger triathlon-self, what would you tell yourself? Advice? Would you change anything? Why??? (or why not?)
Great question! I would not really change a thing. I am a huge believer that how you handle things in the present is nothing to regret in the future. I have NO regrets. I am so fortunate to have a great job, a great hobby and a great family & friends. Honestly, I don't care about much else. And, any mistakes I made when I was younger, I integrate in my training now to ensure my athletes don't make the same mistakes. I am a freak about listening to my body which is why I am rarely injured...never missed a season or race due to injury...in 15 years....and that is something I take a lot of pride in. I would not change a thing. I can not think of ANYTHING....Perhaps take more risks...but I have done what I wanted and as I get older and my kids become older, I have taken a step back from all the travel (as much as we used to do) and that has just been an evolution...necessary and much needed. I have learned so much from the different peers, different athletes and my coaches over the years. And, I think that has shaped me to who I am. The most vital person for me over the years (besides Jerome's support and love) is definitely Coach Dave. He is the one who took my overzealousness and channelled it and taught me how to fight & how to believe in myself. He always said to me, "Jenny, you may never be the fastest but you are the hardest working." And, that always meant more to me than being the fastest. ::))

********************KATE PARKER #36********************kate! I missed your question last night. Some questions came in while I was responding.
1.) how did you come back after bedrest with the twins and how long did it take?
I was on modified bedrest @ 21 weeks and full bedrest in the hospital at 28 weeks and then home on full bedrest until I delievered @ 36 weeks. I was having early contractions and "tested" that I was in labor early, so I was on the couch! NEVER to get up except to use the bathroom and shower 2-3x/week. Yep.
Once I found out I was having twins @ 7 weeks I never ran another step. It took me a bit to get pregnant and I instantly turned into a MOM...and Triathlon needed to play second fiddle. SO, I did not run....I biked on my trainer - NEVER outside - could not risk the fall. And, swam but ick. So, I walked. I enjoyed the break in the sport and walked.
When I got back into trying to get into shape, I had to lose close to 50lbs and I had to learn how to walk again and re-gain just normal funciton and strength. One of my Tri friends, Lindsay Zucco, PT...took care of me for a bit...I went to see her and she helped me re-hab back to walking...then I went out for a jog and for SOME DUMB reason I wore my watch (duh) and I was just shuffling along...but I was SO dedicated. IF I got enough sleep I did what I could each day...and b/c I have always been an athlete, I think the fitness came back quickly. I ran more than anything else - it was quick and easy and helped me lose the baby weight.
I did a 10 mile run race in May - still about 8-10lbs over my ideal weight....which was 3-4 months after babies. For "normal" Pregnancies most moms are rocking by this time...but I had the full rehab and NOT sleeping w/ 2 babies, so I was on a slower comeback. I did some triathlons in July and June. Then, I remember this distinctly.....I entered some run races and was back to my pre-pregnancy weight - minus 5 lbs due to all the running and by September I was running PRs ...18:xx for the 5ks....fastest I have run as an adult...but I HAD NO SWIM yards OR bike miles on me....just minimal compared to what I do now and I was VERY thin...almost too thin - great for running fast but NOT good for being a well rounded Triathlete...probably 8 lbs than i weigh now. After that....I was back.

Back to the whole peeing on the bike....I've tried. Over and over, I've tried. Since I've never been successful, I need to know.... Do you just go where you sit? Do you scoot your butt off the back or to the side? Where does the pee go? Does it have a spray pattern off behind you? Do your water bottles (behind you, or on the downtube) get pee on them? I keep injuring myself, in and out of physical therapy and Drs offices. How did you stay positive when you could not run? Did Jerome ever tease you when you were pregnant? Rachelle - Honestly, does it matter? No. In an IM you are soaking wet....and girls pee and you know how it is there is NO spraying, it just comes out and you don't even know it...it is weird when you are just training and DRY....but in a race it is just another thing and everytime I have done it - I don't even notice it....Just try it, you won't go back! :))

********AL #61**************Hey AL!
1.) How did you say positive when you could not run?
Well, I think it was different for me, b/c I was in control of my situation, ya know? I was pregnant so I shifted my passion from runner/triathlete to MOM and I wanted healthy babies and the DRs said no major running (since I had some issues w/ my pregnancy, so I LISTENED. I am a rule follower.). I knew I could do it again soon enough.
2.) Did Jerome tease me when I was pregnant? Not really - ha! But I think he was always like, "You want to eat all that crap?" yep! :)) Loved it.
3.) Did he get into the delivery room? YES! He made fun of me b/c I was SO tired to push, I was in labor all day and did not deliver until 9.15pm....! He did not cry...I was thrilled but immediately asked for a Pepsi (frommy dad) b/c I was so miserably hungry. They do not let you eat ALL DAY b/c I delievered inthe OR....due to the twins. BUT I did not have a C-Section, so that was all for not in the end. Grrr. :))))
Miss you AL!

1.) What do you think of the Foam Roller and Stick?
LOVE THEM !!!! I am a huge stick user.....carry it around like a child!!! LOVE MINE...swear by them. You know what else I love? COMPRESSION socks and gear....I do wear them around and run in the compression socks under my tights in the cold. I also take 10 min ICE BATHS after every hard workout. HELPS a ton. I personally do not use the FOAM roller, but of course, most that have niggles do and I encourage that!! So, all excellent tools. :)
2.) Who are your top5 picks for Kona?
Oh, tough one..I am one of those not huge followers, if you know what I mean.
I can't bet against Chrissie Wellington. I like Belinda Granger and Linsey Corbin, Becca Keat, Yvonne Vanverkan...Cat Morrison.
Men: Chris McCormack, Crowie, Eneko Llanos...that is my top 3 pick but not in any order.

Okay, I'm late with this....haven't been keeping up on your blog lately I guess. Here are my $.02
1. What about the SIG TAU bi? hehe
2. I thought for SURE someone would ask about moving out of Illinois since you are always talking about the cold weather and snow...I won't ask because I don't want to know the answer.
3. HAHA about the birth of the twin...I still laugh when I picture Jerome explaining how you "pushed" (o;
4. Many people comment on your secure sense of self- I think this comes from mom and I know/hope that our daughters will follow the Parker women in their confidence and securities.
5. IN your response about the early days.....You didn't talk about growing up watching mom participate in all her biking- 500 mile trips across Illinois and training for that. I know I was doing most of the biking with mom as a young girl, but watching her train and commit herself to this sport must have made an impression on your early days. I think about how much of a confidence builder that was for me as a young teenager....being able to keep up with the pace of the "boys" on those rides! So much confidence. The example that set for us is huge. I'll talk more about this in my book....haha0 seriously!
6. Love you!!!

**************#71 MISSY P.********************1.) For strength training you don't necessary recommend weights?
OH no! Sorry for any confusion. I am a firm believer in resistance training + functional training + Pilates + yoga.....+ stretching....all of that and a huge focus on core....so YES I do support and thinks weights are critical. I do vary how I use them as a coach and athelte thru the year....based on racing and training cycles.
2.) Any tips on gathering mental confidence?
Missy, I personally will help you with this, I promise! I think I have via messages already, but FIRST and foremost there is nothing to be embarassed about. Your husband's friends are not who you are trying to ride and train with. I am sure there are several levels of riders with that group ride and I think it is important that you show up on these group rides and BE confident. You know your limiters and strengths and use them. THERE is nothing better than mixing it up with athletes that may be faster than you, but you have to be OK with being in the back and fighting to hang on as long as you can safely. And, do not ride with that group every ride...mix it up so you can ride with some of your peers and women/men that are your level so you can see progress and build confidence in those daily/weekly workouts too!

**************************#74 HEIDI A!*************************1.) How many months do you recommend training for your first A race? I have heard 5 months.
Hey Heidi, it depends on the distance and what base you start with. I see you are training for New Orleans 70.3 in April from your blog....if that is the case and you do not have a base from this summer then I would say 6 months, I would prefer. 1-2 weeks of prep....12 -14 weeks of base...then build.....peak...so, of course you can do it in 20 weeks (5 months), but I usually tell people I like to work with 6 months. DEFINITELY more for an Ironman though. And, of course this is based on meeting your goals @ your "A" race too...which is always why a little more time is best. :)
GOOD LUCK! Jen :)

what would you do if you didn't do triathlons? Would you (or have you) ever raced road biking?- #77

************#76 MARNI R**********************Hey Marni!
1.) What would you do if you did not do Triathlons? Bike raced, have you?
Marni, I have biked race. I do a lot of TTs....and even a Team TT (60k)....and believe it or not, I do a TON of CX racing....just did not last fall due to my car accident and not this fall due to Clearwater but I raced Cat 2 in CX and even do ok - hard to believe b/c my bike handling SUCKS....but the running a bit and fitness works well for me. ANYWAY, no interest in Crits...OR MTB...I have fear and I think if you have fear....you can not race bikes well. I do not enjoy the "fear" of the group...I prefer the solo - ness of Triathlon and pushing myself....not the "thinking" of road riding.
So, not sure what I would do if I did not do triathlons - b/c I love to swim bike and run. I would probably do a mix of the three sports and mix it up a bit - MORE swim meets, travel to Nats for Swimming, CX and TTs.....run races - like an open marathon, etc...but other than this stuff...don't have any major sports passion (besides basketball, but those days are long over)....NO interest in winter sports like skiing - I am DEATHLY afraid of heights, so NO way on getting me on a ski lift. I do enjoy Cross Country skiing though.....but in chicago it is SO cold we get ice usually.
Great and fun questions - thanks! : ) JEN

OK, so I did think of a question...and maybe you can't answer this from your personal experience as an athlete but your professional experience as a coach. How would you counsel an athlete that has lost the "fire in their belly",,,just lost it not from overtraining or overracing or overinjury. How do you get it back? Is it an essential ingredient to have to race well and/or to enjoy the sport?- #79

Do you answer ex-client questions? ;-) I just took a minute and change off my 5K time at Morton Arboretum, a post clavicle fracture PR. I'm wondering if you think it's useful to have specific run coaching for Master's athletes (I'm 54) or is the technique we have what we have and just run more?- #80

Great question. When this happens to an athlete, I usually tell them to mix things up - and either step away from the sport and try something totally different or go back to basics. Just enter 5ks. 10ks. Swim meets for fun....and do some of the passion sports - the ones where you WANT to get up in the AM and do. When I get burnt out from Triathlon, I have twins...Oh wait, nevermind. NO seriously, when I get a little like that....I tend to totally mix up my racing. I do short course so I don't have to spend 1,000 hours on my bike. OR if I don't have that fire in my belly, I need a break. No one can "will" themselves into training day in and day out when you feel like this. SO, I would encourage a huge break. IF you had a huge break and still feel the same way, then I would encourage a different focus...Do a local Triathlon for charity. Become a Race Director for a local 5k. Give back to the Tri community. Sponsor a kid in triathlon...something that ignites that fire again. And, if that fails, take up golf.
And, I do not necessarily think you need to have the fire in your belly to race....it is just the difference between racing and just doing the race.....there is no shame in either!
:) Thanks - Jen

**************#79 Rafael !!**********************Hey Rafael, GREAT to hear from you!!! How have you been? Congrats on your run 5k PR!
1.) I'm wondering if you think it's useful to have specific run coaching for Master's athletes (I'm 54) or is the technique we have what we have and just run more?
Well, you know me well enough to know that I would NOT say run MORE. I do honestly think that Masters atheltes (40+) and then Grand Masters (50+) have their own set of challenges. Recovery is the #1 issue as we get older. Lack of strength, elastisity of the muscles and tendons, lack of core strength.....and I think that masters + really need to have a good plan to incorporate all of this. I do not think that running more is the answer. I DO think Grandmaster athletes CAN run frequently, but also need to incorporate some cross-training, weight training, functional training, Pilates,Yoga....and other things that help maintain your fitness AND recovery process and avoid injury.
GOOD LUCK! - Jen :))

Hey Jen - Can you recommend a bike trainer for someone just getting started with triathlons? Would like to keep riding in the winter, but not ready to invest in a CompuTrainer yet!- #83

***************#82 Linda!***************Hi Linda!
1.) Can you recommend a trainer ?
SURE! No worries.....I always recommend a fluid trainer - Cyclops Fluid2 or Blackwell. I have positive reviews from both of them and a lot of the athletes I work with use them and love them. :) good luck, I hope one works our for you!!

Hi Jen,Can you outline some key points for gaining power on the bike as it applies to a flat course. I'm a very petite woman and I am really strong on hilly courses. But when it comes to flat courses (with headwinds, especially) I feel that I lack power in comparison to my closest competitors. I'm planning to work on more leg strength in the weight room this winter-but what else do you suggest? Thanks.

*********************#84 Leigh-Ann!*****************Hi there!
1.) key points of getting power on the bike as it applies to a flat course?
I suggest a lot of different things. I think that smaller people can ride as well on the flats as they can climb. The difference gets into the wind and how the lighter/smaller riders can manage the wind while not utilizing too much energy.
Do you have a computrainer? If not, I have to be completely honest with you - the FLAT riding of the computrainer and /or trainer is REALLY the way to go to teach your body how to continually push that big ring without stopping - no coasting or relaxing like if you ride the flats outside. I would do some of your key rides on the computrainer or trainer. I would pay attention to your HR and/or WATTS on the flat course and do intervals that increase from 5 min upwards to 20+ min @ Lactate Threshold watts or % of that number. Of course, you can not do this year-round or you would be trashed.....but something to build into your program as you cycle thru the winter and spring.
I live and train in Chicago. It is all flat and windy here. THe only thing that makes me ride well on the flats and winds are punishing myself out there in crappy days & really windy days to work into that wind. I would encourage you to get onto your cross or mountain bike this winter - and bundle up and ride in a bigger gear that is not comfortable to build strength...keeping RPMs around 50-55 and grinding away. BUT ON THE FLATS versus climbing.
Of course I am a fan of weights and functional training.
And, I also have most of my athletes do workouts where they are on the bike /trainer in the winter doing big ring work and then LUNGES and explosive jumps and plyometric work and weight work on and off the bike ....it is VERY hard but a staple in the winter. So, they are working explosive and strength power on the bike and then as well off the bike....these are hard, but ok to do 1x/week.....if you are injury free.
And, whenever it is super windy outside - like 20+mph, get out on your bike and learn how to ride into that wind - and tuck in and think that you are a "knife cutting thru the wind."
I hope this helps! Email me directly if you need more! :)
thanks - Jen

How do you convert a runner into a triathlete when she has not had much success in the bike and frankly, hates to bike? You know, hypothetically. :)- #87

******Meredith #86*******************1. How do you convert a runner into a triathlete when she has not had much success in the bike and frankly, hates to bike? You know, hypothetically. :)
HAHA...hypothetically, of course....Well, your hate for the bike and your lack of success on the bike (your words) go hand in hand!!! It is like swimming, Meredith...if you hate it, you will never be good...how can you be good at something you do not like? PASSION is the key to the success....and you need to find pleasure and passion in the bike. Make sure you LOVE your bike itself....and become "ONE" with the bike. Get a good trainer (if $ is no object a computrainer) and with Liz's help on the workouts - all of this will help you get over the hump. Cycling can be fun...but you have to mix it up....take group computrainer classes at your local Tri store....get a mountain bike and ride all winter....and tell yourself, "I LOVE To bike." I know it is cheesy but you know what? It works.....just like in swimming. And, get some friends - everything is better with some friends in the posse bike group.
HAVE FUN! :))) And, say, "Hi, my name is Meredith and I am a kick ass runner, but I love to bike even more!" Even if it is a lie. That is what I told Elizabeth all those years about her swimming and how look at her - it is SOOO much better!!!
Thanks, jen :))
