More SWIM TALK....?

  • On: 07/24/2009 14:37:35

Oops!  I guess I need to blog – slacker!  I am here, I just tend not to SIT long enough to blog.  But, here I am…We had a nice time in Tucson.  And, I will NOT even complain one second it was 110+F degrees out there.  I really didn’t mind it, but it sure gave me a new appreciation for heat.  Here at home, we go in and out and can train at ANY time of the day.  It is cool this summer…58F when I left for OW swimming this morning…so, we have no issues and I do NOT have to worry about getting in 2 workouts in the AM.  While I was still up at 4.30am today to go and swim, I “don’t” have to.  And, I am appreciative of that.  However, I will take Tucson’s SUMMER over Chicago’s winter anytime.  At least you can go outside in Tucson and train.  NOT in Chicago winters.

And, I am always wondering why everyone talks about Fruit smoothies and Jamba Juice and all of that stuff..WELL it is because that is ALL you want when the temps are that hot…I mean, here we crave much different things (breads, heavier things) in the colder temps.  Very interesting. I mean, I was craving POP…PEPSI the entire time in Tucson…and, that is not something I normally drink at home.  And, I must say, Jerome was a saint out there.  HE loves the heat – and we would be riding in the meat of the day and he was literally probably riding backwards with me – and you know how it goes “JUST GO JEROME!” and he would for a bit, but always came back to check on me.   He waited for me at the top of Mt. Lemmon for a long time – he’s a keeper!  My legs felt great all weekend, but it was a long, hot weekend and PHEW….but when we were not riding/running we were recovering and watching the TOUR.  July is really the best month ever!

I have been thinking a lot about swimming lately.  Yes, more than normal. HA HA.  I DO spend a lot of time thinking about cycling and running and now with Dave 99% of the conversations are about RUNNING and hard running (Not yet, but soon:  august 1st)….and how much trouble I am going to be in.  Jenny Garrison called yesterday and may jump on the bandwagon too – back to the good old days when we could do some training together…!  The more the merrier in hell, in my opinion!  We are running together on Thursday….oh lordy.

Ok, this is what I have been thinking about with swimming…so bare with me IF you are at all interested.  And, what sparked it was an older post that Alicia Parr (blogroll) on swimming and how much swimming she does NOT do.  And, as I have talked about before, we came out neck to neck at USAT Nationals a couple of years ago from the swim.

Some people need to swim A LOT! I mean, 20,000+ yards per week to keep their feel of the water and improve and or keep things status quo.  And, to be honest, the shorter the race, the more you need to swim…so OLY athletes need to be in that water ALL THE TIME – Ironman athletes, not as vital, of course.  And, on the flipside, there are swimmers that grew up swimming and or just pick it up naturally and do NOT need to swim that much at all. IN fact, just 1x/week or 2x/week max and they are fine.  Seriously!  I am one that needs to be in the water ALL THE TIME.  Alicia and Jerome…notsomuch.

I make fun of Jerome all the time because he HATES to swim.  He will never go to the pool and he goes to Open water with me b/c we have fun together.  And, he tortures me under the water, but if I did not swim, he would not swim!  And, Jerome is a super swimmer.  Of course he can be faster, but he is an IM athlete and swims 56-57s with out swimming, so why bother?  And, I get his point, but my counter-point is that he would be MUCH better on the bike/run if he swam more and was more efficient in the swim.  Um, yeah.  That is what I keep telling him…but he doesn’t budge.  Even after I beat him out of the water at EM by 1 minute (HA) I made fun of him and all he said, “Was swimming 4x/week for 1 min worth that?”  Ok, smart ass…while I was 1 minute up from Jerome I was many minutes from the next 35-39 girl, so for me, yes!

And, my point is this. I actually need to swim to swim well.  I NEED to feel that water on a VERY regular basis. I am not a natural swimmer.  I know some of you may think otherwise, but just like everything else, I worked my ass off for years and years and being SUPER consistent and it has paid off.  Yes,  I did swim as a kid and in HS for a bit, but I was NOT a star nor even close to that….it was not my passion….I was a basketball player /track runner (jumper- haha) by heart.  Swimming was a LOT OF WORK back then (still is!).

And, I have REALLY noticed a big change in my swimming.  Our Masters team goes from LATE September through mid-May.  Basically the entire year that is NOT Triathlon Season.  So, I swim A LOT and hard those months (after my year end Triathlon break in the fall)….so, I come into the SPRING in phenomenal POOL SHAPE.  I peak my pool swim shape in Mid- April, which is the Illinois State Swim Championships…and which I swim the 1650y TT and do my best to win that sucker….So, I peak in Mid-April in the pool.  THEN, the swim team is FRIED and they all fall apart and start to drink beers.  And, there we are … the Triathletes – HAVING to get back fired up to race Triathlons in OW!  Not easy after swimming as much as we do on that team weekly.

So, that brings us to Triathlon season.  I can easily swim by myself and do so a lot.  This year, I have been so-so on that.  I was SUPER good in prep for my 1st part of the season’s A race: EM.  Then, I took a break….from everything…and then, July 1st I got back on the bandwagon, but more base stuff.  I said “um, I am not going to stare at the black line today.”  And, I found myself in Open water 3x/week or so.

There is a HUGE difference between OW swimmers and POOL swimmers.  There is a technique in each of these venues.  And, then you add the (ick) wetsuit and boom….swimming is different.  All of a sudden I was swimming 2 x week for 2+ miles in OW.  One of them a SWIM RACE and the other one where I would swim sans wetsuit while the group swam with their wetsuits and I would kill myself to stay up.  The wetsuit is sooo easy.  Well, after 1 month of this, I have decided…I AM VERY strong in the OW but not sure I am fast.  And, there is a huge difference…and considering I am not doing an IM this year..well, not sure that is a good thing.

I got into the pool on Tuesday this week..now of course, keeping in mind that I came off a 3 day big weekend in HOT Tucson, but when I saw the 100 times and 200 times I knew…right then, that I was a huge slacker.  HA.  Not that it matters all that much in July for me (next A race is November)…but ….it is a true sign that I can not just pop into the pool and expect to be fast..or efficient OR have good flip turns…and my IM stuff..pathetic.   But, I can swim 2 + miles with my eyes closed…so, what do you want?  Ideally, both, but I got SO tired of that damned black line in the winter and unlike most of the world, we do NOT have outdoor 50m pools here that are close so it is nearly impossible for me to swim outside…

So, what does this mean?  Well, I need to do some pool work for my upcoming OLY Triathlons in August.  Second, I need to make sure I am not getting any worms/E-coli (ha!) from all the OW.  Third, I am having fun & the BEST workout of my week is our weekly Friday morning pick up 4.30am swims in OW as the sun rises…NOT much compares to that.  Makes me happy.  And, at the end of the week, that is all that I need.

And, another thing I noticed…which of course we all KNOW, but it hit me in the face on Wednesday.  I swam the 2 mile swim race with  OUT the wetsuit. I was one of the few.  I had to start the race and jump in a few minutes later this past week…and I usually can catch the swimmers and get back into the lead pack, but NOT this week…I did not have a wetsuit and man, I forgot what a difference that is…and how absolutely trashed I was when I got out. I worked hard and basically had a mini-bonk (I am not used to working out at 7pm at night) and I needed a gel and then tried to run a 10k (hilly) and was like, “UM, that is not going to work!”  And, part of that fatigue is Tucson, but the other part of that is a VERY hard sans wetsuit swim race…what a DIFFERENCE!  And, I swim w/o the wetsuit so I can keep the feel of the water and quite frankly, it is MUCH harder and makes you work on form and when you DO put the wetsuit on (like I wore this AM) you are FLYING….like it is stupid easy.

So, what this means is two things:  1.) I need to get my ass back into the pool starting 8/1.  2.) I am in good OW shape and strong in the OW….which I will take in July!  Because I can NOT say the same thing about the pool swimming!  But, since I am not training for any swim meets, I think that is fine!

This past Wednesday night we had a light crew….50 swimmers, maybe?  Most did a local ½ Ironman so were recovering, but ALL I HEAR all day long is how people can not breathe in the water, can not get comfortable in the water, can not improve their swim times, etc….well, if you do not swim in the OW you will not get better.  There is no way around it.  The pool is great for swim FITNESS and of course that is key, but at the end of the day, there is no substitute for the Open water – so make it a priority!  J  And, get rid of the excuses.  I sure wish people had the passion for the water as they did for their running!!  Have a good SWIMMING weekend!

Oh, and some of you have asked IF Jerome was successful on our trip to Tucson in talking me into an IM in 2010...well, the verdict is still out.  He is IN though for one next year....and it is a little tempting.  But, can someone do the bike training for me?  thanks so much.

Although I'm not 100% sure (mostly because I'm clueless when it comes to all things swimming), I think I'm of your ilk - need more swimming to swim faster!!  I feel sooo, sooo much better in the water when I'm swimming a lot, even if my arms are tired, then when I rest up.  The water feels foreign to me if I only swim 2-3 days/week!!!

Anyway, I always love your posts on swimming because I learn a lot.  I hope a few more years of swimming consistently will net the same results for me as they have for you - very fast swim times!!  But beyond that I think what helps you in OW and swimming well in races is your aggressiveness and fearlessness.  Hard to learn that in a pool if you know what I mean.  ;)

Beth: That is a GREAT Point....and one I forgot to blog about....but I am fearless in the water...nothing worries me and I am the one HOPING for nasty conditions...so, that is true.  BUT that is learned.  I was not always like that.  Last night I had a dream we had a storm and the water engulfed me....and I woke up in a sweat....but at the lake this morning it was like glass....so, I got over it :) !  haha

Great post Jen! :) I actually really enjoy OW swimming - I'm just afraid of what's in the water with me. Lake - no worries. But...I'm just afraid of the things with teeth that are bigger than me. But I know that IN ORDER TO GET BETTER - this is just something I'll have to go. So I'll go out with groups....But I can also really relate to you - when I'm out of the water for a while, it feels very foreign when I get back in. Don't mind the black line so much - maybe b/c I get to swim outside...

And YES - I totally crave carbonation, pop, and fruit smoothies. I had one just the other day... YUM!

I so wish I was Alicia or Jerome.  I'm guessing I need to be in the pool all the time just to be a half way descent swimmer - it's certainly not going to happen if I'm not in there.  Why didn't my mom drag me kicking and screaming to swim team practice when I was a kid and begged to quit?  A little more time on the swim team as a kid would probably save me a lot of pain and suffering now.

I have been reading your blog for quite some time, first comment.  I was a HS and college swimmer, dont have much natural talent and loose the feel of the water quite easily.  Swimming is torture for me now (most of the time) but if I dont swim more than 2x/week, it all hurts.  I think swimming is all your natural feel of the water, I have friends that probably havent swam in years but could jump in the pool like it was nothing.

As you know, I swam up through college.  Fortunately, I am ok swimming 3x/week doing about 2000 yds per practice, but I worked my tail off for 20+ years to acquire my technique and get to where I was. (I am nowhere near that now).   However, I knew a ton of college swimmers who also worked their butts off, but never came close to where you are now.  And after coaching and teaching swimming for nearly 15 years, I hate to say this, but no matter how hard some people work, they may never acquire a true feel for the water, although they can get faster.  Please don't be offended if you think this is you, it's just what I've witnessed over the years.  On a positive note, almost everyone can become more efficient, even Michael Phelps as he is working on a new type of stroke now!

UGH, I wish I was one of those "natural" swimmers too!  This post was great and informative.  The water definitely feels weird when I am not in there my 3 x week... and I do love the open water, its just so peaceful - no matter the conditions.  Right now we don't even have the option of wearing a wetsuit unless we want to melt, our lakes are like soup - yucky!  And YES you are SOOO right - our summers, no matter how hot it is is much more tolerable than your winters/10 months of the year!  OOOH and during the summer watermelon is one of my favorites and we have to carry water bottles everywhere with us in order to stay hydrated!  Thanks for this post... I learned some good stuff :-)

Very interesting read!  See, I can take it or leave it as far as swimming goes.  I've said to Scott and Sondra over and over again that swimming in OW honestly doesn't feel all that much different to me than swimming in a pool.  Weird, huh?  Sometimes I even think I'm "faster" and stronger in OW.  Weird again, right?  I am certainly not a fast swimmer by ANY means (as you know), but I do think that I have somewhat of a natural feel for the water... I just get in there (pool, wetsuit/non-wetsuit, lake, Gulf) and I'm comfy.  I think that 'faster' for me, will come with refining my technique and the timing of my kick.  Now... if only I could translate all of this 'comfy' to the run.  Make me wish, like you, that I had run track in HS!  LOL!Grrr...

Another great post!  You always provide such wonderful food for thought. :o)

Don't underestimate the impact of training in the Tucson heat on, well, EVERYTHING.

As I mentioned in my email, I'll write up a blog post this weekend with my own guesses as to why some people (including me) don't seem to need to swim as much as others (others that DO have a swim b/g, not those still in the learning curve).

Keep having fun at your swim workouts!

Once it gets hot, I always want soda after a long/hard workout. I barely drink it in the winter!

Jen,
hi!  Bad news I have a partial tear of my achilles tendon so I haven't been able to run for 5 weeks and am thinking it won't be until September that I can try to run again.  Good news is I have decided to take swim lessons.  I have been cycling alot (borrowed a tri bike for the summer) and now I need to learn to swim (maybe a triathlon in the future).  Anyhow wondered if you do swim lessons or have a referral.  Just let me know.
Glad to hear you are doing well!

What a great post, thanks!  I always learn so much from you and gain some insight regarding your thoughts on success in triathlon. Swimming is so frustrating to me and honestly I often feel like my swim times are the same whether I do NO training or swim 3x/wk (which is a lot for me).  I have dealt with my mediocre swim times by doing the longer races; but now that I am injured I am going to go back to the short stuff for a while. I guess this means I should put a little more effort into my swimming :) I am curious if you have ever met a triathlete who is a stellar swimmer that learned as an adult? So many of the uber triathlon swimmers were in the water as little kids swimming year round. Learning as an adult is so challenging, but I haven't given up!  I am going to sign up for adult swim lessons and join a masters group.

This was a great posting Jen.  Thanks so much.  I really, really enjoyed reading it.  With my knee being injured, I mentally psyched myself up last week to really focus on swimming right now-as each time I have tried to bike or run my knee pain comes back-very upsetting but I think it will be okay as long as I give it some time.  Anyway, seeing that I am only doing one more sprint triathlon this year and swimming is not my best, it really has taken a lot to go and get in the water regularly and do long swims, very hard.  Have been doing swims in Centennial's deep end-closest to OW around here!  I am going to try and make it to LITH this week but depends on my husband's work schedule.  You are right though, the little OW I did before Pleasant Praire was a HUGE improvement and got me excited about the OLY next year and that I need way more OW.  Also, can a medicore swimmer like myself join a masters this winter?  I see them at my club but thought that was for elite swimmers.

I am not sure who posted last, was that you Karen Doyle?  If so, to answer your question, it is a MYTH that Masters is for "elite" swimmers....up here in Elgin we have ALL levels and a ton of beginners to very competitive - and if you are down in Naperville, Glen Ellyn area they have a ton of Masters programs you can go to regularly and ALL LEVELS are welcome!  :)

Oh Jen!  Of course, you will be ready for your oly tri with all the swimming you do.  And, I certainly agree it is consistency and quality time in the pool.  Not just wishing it away so you can run/bike.  Good for you for toughing it with the wetsuiters in the OW.  You have inspired me to try and drive the 45 minutes to the closest ecoli free lake.  NOW, if you only would have mentioned what its like to swim at altitude!  Oh baby!  Just swam at 9,000 ft here in Colorado and I most certainly panicked the first 500 yds, felt like I was suffocating.... it took 1000 yds to adjust but I stuck with it!

well, if you want to do triathlon, you have to swim, right? and if you want to do well, you have to practice which means being in the water. "a lot" is relative I suppose. :)

thanks for the swimmy post!

Neat post, Jen!  I am taking it all in, especially now that I have officially become a swimmer!!  :)  One day I would love to get out there and do a OW swim... on the to-do list.  I have learned as well that there are all different levels of swimmers in the Masters program, when I thought it was only for the elite swimmers.  That will be my next goal!  I  met Marie-Roca Bey (Jim Bey's wife) at Naperville Running Store (she's so sweet, she says hello!), and, as you know, she does the Masters program at Edward Health Club in Naperville... she told me they do all levels there as well.  She told me to come and join them!  ;)  So I might go there or I will stay at Lifetime, so far I like it there.  Thanks for your insight, always love it! :)  Take care, you!!

It's finally HOT here in Boston and I crave Coffee Coolada's (skim milk) from DD's! Yummy.
Hypoxic sets came to mind when I read "people can't breathe in the water" Yikes, we did a pull set the other day and my HEAD WAS GONNA POP  4x150's  7,3,9 evens 3,11,7

We did a really cool set today wanna see?  I knew you did!
1 x 800 do an open turn at 600 and get time on 2:00r
1 x 600 do an open turn at 400 get time. Go faster than time in 800 on 1:30r
1 x 400 do an open turn at 200 get time. Go faster than split in 600
1 x 200 do an open turn at 100 get time. You know the deal. on :30r
1 x 100 wicked fast
It was a distance descend set. The key was to go easy on the first 800 and then slowly descend each of the splits in the remaining set
